Well, I've decided it's probably a good thing for Vincent D'Onofrio and those who are leaving with him to go. The show really has gone downhill after season 7. Some say after season 5 but I liked the change up Leight gave us during season 6 and 7. By then I couldn't have cared less about the perps. I was so much more interested in the lead characters that the case file sometimes just got in the way. lol
I know it was supposed to be about the criminals and the cops were just supposed to be moving the story along. But when you have two superb actors such as Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe playing the lead roles, it's hard to not care about them. They're not over the top or really unlikable like the SVU leads. [This criticism is for the characters. The actors are just doing what they're expected to do. I love Chris Meloni. Am watching him (and Erbe) in Oz right now and he's superb, same for B.D. Wong.]
The irony of all this is that USA is supposed to be all about characters. And yet, they're just dumping three characters for financial considerations. Here's a post I came across last night by BASRIC. I will vouch for her as an honest person - not like some who claim to be experts on a certain forum I no longer frequent who are just pushing an agenda - who has been quite enlightening on the behind the scenes in the past.
What I come away with from this post is that it's nice to know that D'Onofrio and Erbe have a lot of loyalty to each other and to the integrity of their characters, who wouldn't abandon each other either. I know Vincent is the focus of most but the partnership of Goren and Eames has really taken on a life of its own thanks to the enigmatic nature of their relationship.
I also am a little less angry at Wolf Productions for saying no to killing off Ross, Goren and Eames. At least they have some kind of idea of the importance of these characters to the fans. USA - again, most ironically - apparently doesn't care about their so-called character oriented reputation when it interferes with the bottom line.
I wrote USA to complain. Wish I had stopped to save my letter but I was so angry and ready to just tell them what I thought - I didn't swear or froth at the mouth like Glenn Beck, I restrained myself and settled for sarcasm - but since apparently we have similar feelings on the matter, here's a post by BobbyG that pretty much said everything I said or wish I had said. I didn't tell them I'm no longer watching anything on that network - not even Burn Notice, which I love due to Bruce Campbell. I figure they'll dump all of them if they become too expensive anyway.
I encourage everyone to boycott USA. I know I will once my beloved characters are gone. With all due respect to Jeff Goldblum, LOCI was Vincent's show. He has created a good character but needs to be on a show NOT called LOCI. LOCI no longer exists once Goren and Eames are gone.
So good luck to Vincent, Kathryn and Eric. You will be missed.

Thanks for the Basric link Musicwench. I didnt see that before.
Fact is, they have now erased all writers and all original cast so why carry on as Criminal Intent, especially if they are becoming light entertainment? Its a completely new show really for a different audience.
Wolf has never done clean outs like that with his other shows. The other shows have turn overs.
That's because I think USA has forced them to make more cuts than NBC ever has. Cable has lower budgets and LOCI had a network budget.
They just want to keep the name in the hopes that people will tune in thinking it's still LOCI and maybe enjoy it enough to stay with Goldblum.
As my husband said, he's likable enough but it's just not Criminal Intent without Goren.
This is an interesting blog. Thank you for this link. I thought the X-files, ER, Practice and original L&O exits were a bit much. However, this has to be the most ridiculous and disgraceful happening in drama TV in years. They are hanging everything on an actor/character who only appeared in 8 episodes (2 had an original CI cast member)This is just one episode more than the 7 episodes that actually aired of the 1997 TV series Raines with Jeff Goldblum.
I feel sorry for Goldblum. He is getting the worst deal.
I must say I feel a bit sorry for him too. He is like a pawn in some male game of prowess, proving a series can survive without its main character!
Its a bit like the human being versus the system. If LOCI survives without Goren its a triumph for the system and a great loss for what makes us human, because what made Goren great was his humanity.
This character defied the system, the Law and Order format, and became something special. Its a pity they destroyed that with season 8.
In a way I hope Vincent D'Onofrio gets so buried in a film career or being asked to do "guest appearances" on shows that have higher quality and standards than L&O:CI is left with that he will never be available to make a guest appearance on CI. I was glad to read that Julianne Nicholson is now replacing Parker Posey in a play. I want to see these actors all over the place.
At least James Spader of the last year of the Practice did not have to remain on a show called the Practice. He and his character Alan Shore went to Boston Legal.
Why didn't USA have a Zach Nichols spinoff "Zach Nichols "shrink detective" or something to that affect. Even if I did not watch CI or did not like any of the departing actors, I still would think this is a sloppy transition.
I just read where Matt Roush who has never been a Goren fan but appreciates Vincent D'Onofrio's performances in other projects, has said that "this is the beginning of the end for CI" and compared it to Mulder leaving the X-Files and that he is a proponent of shows leaving at the time of their natural expiration date.
Gotta say I'm not a die hard fan or anything but I know you are and I'm sorry to hear they're letting D'Onofrio, Erbe and Bogosian go. I've seen all three of them in other things and they are great actors and performers. Saw Bogosian live in New York many years ago before there even was a Criminal Intent. He's definitely a treasure.
yes, the natural expiration date was end of season 7 with Frame. Superb work with Julian Glover. They were really building up something special and had good stable ratings, much better than season 8. Season 8 was like a fall out after a blitz.
Why dont American TV shows have the guts to end themselves when they should! I know Musicwench says the same about the last season of Homicide, so its history repeating itself. Its like they want to destroy their own carefully built reputation...
