Playing Dead - Thoughts & Impressions

SPOILERS ALL OVER THE PLACE!!! IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THIS YET, STOP HERE!!!

Eames and Goren
Back on the case

So, last night was the big premiere - several months overdue. All that angst for what? Well, for people who loved classic LOCI from the first three seasons or so - season four is where it started getting more interesting for me as there were more personal insights being given to us as fans of the actual characters as opposed to the actual story lines - I'm sure it was like a little piece of heaven. I am making huge assumptions here as I have not read anything on any forums and am likely to not - unless it's Major Case, which still tempts me from time to time.

For me, it was pretty much a non-event show-wise. Vincent D'Onorfio-wise, however, it was really nice to see him again. Same for Kathryn Erbe.

The thing about the show was that honestly, you could have dropped any other detectives into the mix and it would have been basically the same show. I'm bored with that. I want to know what's going on with Goren and how he's dealing with things since we saw him last. I want to know how things are with him and Eames, with him and Rodgers ( good I guess as they rarely interacted in the one scene she was in), how things are with Ross. Speaking of Ross, we saw him less than we saw Deakins and Carver combined in season 1-5 epis. I am not a happy camper.

Okay, I am a happy camper because we get new Bobby episodes and I'm still anxious to see Jeff Goldblum's premiere. But other than that the show could be any other cop show as far as I'm concerned.

Oh and while it was one of those confusing, plot twisty kind of show, I kind of figured it out the minute the sleaze bag stepdad was intimidating the stepdaughter in the bath. Even knew about the daughter - very China Townish and not very imaginative, IMO.

Wow, guess the casefile was lamer than I thought. lol Sorry, but I miss Warren Leight BIG TIME right now. Season six and seven had some really great season openers. This one was just bleh. Of course I'm sure they're counting on die hard fans to tune in anyway and I did. Even my husband, who liked the earlier version of LOCI - he's the one who got me hooked - thought it was an okay episode and wasn't sure how much he liked it yet. We have to watch it again he says, just to make sure he didn't miss anything. I don't think he did. lol

So let's hope things get better. I would like to see more focus on what's going on with Bobby. This episode was all right. Kind of like old LOCI where you see Goren a lot more than anyone else and that was okay. But I love his interaction with Ross and missed that a lot.

Eric Bogosian is far too good a talent to waste on walking and talking for five minutes - if that - in the show. And I don't want to see that happen.

I'm just assuming and giving the writers the benefit of the doubt that they need to get more of a feel for the Goren and Eames characters so they're playing it safe with the first few episodes. They did show Goren's addressing being abused as a child. Stephanie Sengupta mentioned that in an interview she did once. Goren was abused but there was never a clarification of what kind. Mental or physical but from his interaction with the victim, it made me feel that he there was physical abuse involved as in he related to being out of his body and going to another place.

Those were nice touches. Guess I'm just spoiled and want a little more.

For the positive side I loved seeing Goren without his beard. lol I was growing used to it but really, I hate it when he hides that gorgeous face behind a beard. And of course I hate facial hair on men. The only guy who looks better with facial than without is Tom Selleck, IMO.

Also, Kathy Baker as the evil mother with a very odd relationship with her pedophile son was an interesting turn. I'm so used to seeing her as the mom on Picket Fences.

So Goren and Eames seem to be back. I did feel something was off, though. I just can't put my finger on it and I will probably figure it out when I see other people's thoughts and opinions.

That's all for now folks. Will add on if I get an urge. Must be I'm more interested as I've made two posts in two days which is a record for me lately. Here's hoping Jeff Goldblum's episode is more....well, just more. lol

I didn't think it was the best epi ever, but I thought it was good. Personally I felt kind of relieved that we didn't have to deal with any Goren angst right off the bat. (I just read though the epi that was supposed to be the opener orginally did though...so we'll see it eventually).

I will admit I was happy about the lack of tension between Goren and Eames, but you're right something still seems off. HOnestly though I think it's more the writers still feeling them out and getting them down more so than someting actually going on between them.

Yeah, I am hoping that is the case. Didn't know there was supposed to be another epi opening the season. We'll see how things play out then.

I think I'm at the point with this show where I just want to know what's happening with Goren and Eames. lol The casefile has become incidental or something.

Also still am really miffed at the lack of presence of the Ross character. Very weak epi to bring n the season for us I think. But then, you can't make everyone happy now can you? lol

Hey, I'm hanging in there. Not at the forums because I honestly am sick to death of discussing how well or ill Goren/VDO looks. The character looks tired and depressed? Well, duh. He's supposed to be. From the VDO photos off the set, he seems happy and just fine. Weight? Hey, I'm a lot heavier as I head towards 50 than I was heading towards 30 so it happens. ;-)

Oh and glad you stopped in to discuss Lynnez! Am sort of missing the 'saner' bunch of forums buddies here. :-D

We miss you too. I don't think I'm going to post to the forums but I did put some thoughts up on my livejournal.

I wa kinda surprised we didn't see more Ross too. But from an interview I read between VDO and Erbe that won't be the case all season. So I'm hopeful. we'll just have to see how it plays out.

I've only screencapped 'Playing Dead' so far, which doesn't constitute watching it (that's for later today), but I've already heard that the Anti-VDO-drums are going full throttle at some sites. So what else is new?! The same names seem to have been telling us the show isn't what it used to be since season 4, but somehow, they have to keep watching then coming back to tell us so.

However, I'd put money on the fact Vincent will be getting a damn good kicking over everything from the length of his hair, his tummy (it's HIS tummy, it's therefore a thing of rare beauty when it's around), or the general quality of the script. They seem to forget it's his job to interpret the words he's been given, same as everyone else on the show.

It will be interesting to see how we progress this season, although Vincent has already said it's more about Bobby 'doing his job and holding stuff together' this time around.

I'm looking forward to seeing it, but after so long a wait, he can just stand there and I'll be happy.

I liked getting back to fundamentals. I think we (and Bobby) need some time to slow down and get our breath back. I believe it was not the first episode shot, so who knows what the original starter held.

No Janet, they did not bring that back. lol

I'm glad I'm avoiding the sites, because like you Diane, I've heard the rumors of anti-VDO comments. That's why I'm avoiding them. It's getting ludicrous and some people need to go watch someone else if they're going to be so critical of every little thing.

I'm not happy with the first epi but I'm also good with waiting. Like I said, the writers just need time to get used to the characters I think. Considering they're all new except for one, I'm not surprised.

I'm curious about the original opener, too. But it's just a matter of wait and see!

Thanks for the comments!

Good to see honest comments somewhere Diane! Some sites have always been places of negativity, and have always been on the back of VDO.One site attacked balcers writing during season 5 too and couldnt wait for a new showrunner. It does put people off the forums so i understand why some fans prefer to blog.

Basically there is a division in the audience between those who want straight procedural law and order ( though i dont know why because the mothership is on the bubble again), and those who want something different. For a while, since season 4, LOCI was different. Sounds like its going back to what it was in the beginning which I found boring, especially season 1.
Trouble is you cant be honest on the sites anymore.
So I trust the bloggers I know as genuine people.

Hopefully your hubby will stabilize but dealing with the lungs its a scary thing. There's nothing worse than not being able to breathe. And as one who has suffered through collapsed lung three times, I hope it doesn't happen to him.

I feel for you. My husband is much older than I am and I am terrified when he gets a cold or tells me he feels off so I know what you're feeling there. And your poor kitty..so confusing.

As for LO:CI I'm not happy with the writers they've hired. But it was so much better as I am Scripting it and watching it word for word and frame by frame.

Love out to you and your hubby.
